The Taiwanese/Hong-Kongnese Forum entry "You Gou" by William Kwok literally translates into dark ditch. That also is were the director takes us with his gloomy piece shot on a digital camera.
The film opens with a grand scene and mysterious music with a woman standing on a rock talking about how she once had to jump into death from there while fleeing a group of robbers wanting to rape her. She chose her chastity over life. The bottom of this virgin rock is were the director leaves off to tell his tale. In a nearby village Qing Hua is being married to the autistic village boy Sissy. At the same time some guys are digging up female corpses. They have made a business out of selling these corpses to the villagers who share the weird believe that their unmarried dead would be lonely unless their relatives arrange mates for them in the underworld through marriage rituals.
As the wedding night approaches Qing Hus and Sissy find the orphaned boy Chun Seng who is their lover but had to hide during the ceremony since the villagers are not supposed to know about their secret threesome love. Things become omnious when Qing Hua dreams about the virgin that died after jumping from the rock. At the same time Chun Seng is being offered a handsome amount of money to loot the virgin grave. Shortly afterwards Sissy disappear. In their concern Qing Hua and Chun Seng move closer together and their affair is about to be exposed. They have no choice but to dig up the virgin tomb for money and flee to the city. On arrival they are accidentially reunited with Sissy and even end up living in the same room. The forth roommate is a girl called Yan Yan who somewhat resembles the virgin. Qing Hua is in shock after seeing her and suspicious of her motives. She expecting her to take revenge for being taken out of her tomb. Yet Qing Hua cannot stop the guys from growing much closer to Yan Yan.
In the end she has to find out she cannot possess her lovers. The film concludes where it began – with the virgin standing on the rock.
The director is a telling the story like a fairytale and the it the entire production comes over as a dark yet beautiful fairytale. Both the pictures as well as the music contribute to a mysterious and yet romantic experience. One is almost drawn into the screen to follow the journey of those young people. But there is always an end to any movie picture and one has to let go.
